The Kid

The Kid ★★★★½

Chaplin's feature film debut is an uncommonly sweet tale of a resourceful young orphan (Coogan) and his endearingly resourceful caretaker (Chaplin). Saw this for the first time a while back on Filmstruck (RIP), but the 4K transfer that was once hosted there (and is currently on the Criterion Channel) really shines on the Criterion disc.

It's honestly a miracle Chaplin was able to craft something so fully formed his first time out, even with years of reps perfecting the two-reel silent comedy under his belt. It's almost impossible not to be moved by the film's conclusion, or by the evident desperation on Coogan's face during the most pleading and emotional moments of his performance.
