Figured I might as well ease on into #SpookySzn by finally diving into this Karloff at Columbia set from Eureka.
Karloff shines in a dual role here, and the transfer on the Eureka disc is absolutely stunning to look at. It's definitely lodged firmly somewhere in the middle-ground between being a straight-up period piece and genuine gothic horror, but it boasts a wealth of atmosphere either way.
There's also no shortage of cinematographic flourishes throughout, which elevates the proceedings considerably. Just in sheer terms of mise-en-scene, there's not a whole lot that marks this as a relic from a particular era. Not saying it's flashy and modern or anything, but the camera's surprisingly mobile in many scenes, and imaginatively utilized throughout.
