Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island ★★★½

This is a film I've now seen three times, not because it's particularly good, but because I compulsively rewatch movies before a sequel (or sidequel) is released. That said, I think I like this more each time I watch it. Not because I'm appreciating things that I'd overlooked, but because without the weight of expectations (who needs theme or subtext (the closest this film skirts to any of that is a Nixon bobblehead and a brief speech about how "sometimes you don't have an enemy until you go looking for one") or dimensional characters?) I can more easily enjoy the eye candy -- and there's a lot of it, and it's slick, and it's colorful, and nearly every frame on the island is carefully composed to look awesome -- and the goofiness and the references (Jurassic Park! Prometheus! Hulk!), and generally disappear into the spectacle for a couple hours. And really what more do you want from a kaiju flick? They can't all be Shin Godzilla, right? Right?
