Pedro Afonso’s review published on Letterboxd:
Before I tell you how amazing this movie is, let me give you a brief explanation of what most of my life revolves around, superheroes. More specifically, Spider-Man. Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve been obsessed with Spider-Man and it’s different reincarnations. I had a billion action figures, most of my clothing was Spider-Man related and I had multiple stacks of comic books of the webslinger, some taller than me. And although there’s been a lot of films that perfectly portrayed the character, there was never one that made me feel like it’s true to the comics, each film gave a unique twist to the character of Spider-Man and as much as I appreciate that, I’ve always wanted something more, something more faithful.
Well, I’m happy to report that Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse succeeds at accomplishing that unrealistic goal I had for the film. It literally feels like a comic come to life.
I can barely think of any negative thing to say about the film and honestly I don’t want to. This film just hit every note for me, from the multi layered and incredibly detailed animation, to excellent character work, this just might be the best Spider-Man film we have ever got, hell, it’s probably top 5 best superhero films we’ve ever got. Miles Morales had the best big screen debut we could’ve asked for and it’s all thanks to the incredible writing work from Lord and Miller and the brilliant performance of Shameik Moore, who should go down as one of the best castings of all time. There’s so much to talk about this film, but unfortunately most of it it’s spoiler territory, so I’ll just have to wait until it releases worldwide.
Into The Spider Verse is nothing short of a groundbreaking achievement. It was able to juggle all these proprieties so well and was able to give everyone their moment in the sun. It’s a film about family, hope and finding out who you really are and believing in yourself. Everyone can wear a mask, what matters is what you do to earn it. Simply put, this is the best superhero film of the year for me, as well as my favorite film of 2018.
Of course, with no surprise, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse gets a 5/5.
