The Conjuring

The Conjuring ★★★★

Part of MysticSpoon-Watches-A-Whole-Bunch-Of-Horror-Films-Because-Y’know-It’s-October 2013.

In short: pretty fucking terrifying, and pretty fucking good as well. The Conjuring is one of those rare modern horror films that doesn't end up pissing me off. Sure, it does have its moments of annoying musical stingers and other things generally found in modern horror films that I don't like, it is still way better than 90% of horror films I've seen from this or the last decade. No, I'm serious: the characters aren't forgettable, the movie isn't overloaded with jumpscares, and the film's ending isn't pointless, a nonsensical jumpscare, bullshit or something that leaves a bad taste in your mouth afterwards. No, The Conjuring is better than that. It is a damn good haunted house film. James Wan definitely knows how to make things look incredibly creepy. Maybe a little too creepy sometimes though, which slightly ruins the believability of the film, because it is based on a true story. But you can tell by the acting and directing that a lot of passion and respect went into this project. And in the end, it is still one of the best films I've seen this year. It is a near-spectacular horror film.
