Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

gunn’s returning to the grotesquerie he loves and is great at (some of the character designs are so delightfully GRIM!) but this felt like being punched in the kidney constantly. almost unbearably sad. it’s at least very successful in making you want the villain to die the worst death imaginable. also oddly joke-lite compared to the previous instalments, not that i want more "marvel quips" but i've always found the guardians humour way funnier than other MCU entries, it's just so goofy and sincere. but for this, most of the jokes were already in the trailer so didn't really land. the stuff that worked best for me were the visual gags - it's best when it's disgusting. a difficult task though, to wrap up a narrative that gunn clearly so personally identifies with, and i did cry, so who's the real winner here. the florence and the machine moment is great but it's also kind of funny because badlands dropping in the credits hit way more for me! maybe because i found out yesterday that one of my colleagues had never heard of bruce springsteen. still feeling tender from that honestly
