Goddamn. This movie is a tragedy. If you know anything about the Black Panthers, you know how this story ends. It doesn't make it hurt any less. The world lost a good man when the US government assassinated Fred Hampton as he slept.
Daniel Kaluuya IS Fred Hampton. The man puts on a masterclass - the scene in the church is beyond powerful. Lakeith Stanfield is phenomenal too. This movie will win Oscars, and it should. Jesse Plemmons is good here too. He's really made an excellent career after Breaking Bad.
What really angers me is that US history teaches that the Panthers were some kind of terrorist group of commies. They believed in the right to self-determination and dared to believe that the rights that the US is supposed to guarantee applies not only to white people, but to Black Americans as well.
This movie gave me chills throughout. It's damn good and a haunting reminder of the failures of the US.
