Arachnophobia ★★★½

The Amblin brand is pretty much a genre of its own by now. If Amblin and Spielberg is on board, the movie is guaranteed to have an air of whimsy and playfulness.

The film never reaches the same level of nostalgia or excitement as "Eight Freak Legged" and Trevor Jones's score uses too many whimsical melodies that ruins these moments of terror by amplifying the humor but destroying any tension which is demanded in these scenes. In many ways, this movie is a tamed down version of "Gremlins" and "Aliens," only instead of demonic creatures or penis-headed beings, we have little spiders and everything takes place in a small town.

Special mention should go to Jeff Daniels and John Goodman for their awesome performances. They excel when it comes to physical performance, especially when it comes to delivering the scares and humor through their reactions.

All in all, what it lacks in scare-factor, it makes up for with large doses of fun and entertainment value. Will definitely give it a watch.
