Knives Out

Knives Out ★★★★½

YES YES YES YES! I went into this wanting to fall in love with it, and that's absolutely what I did. The film grabbed me right from the start and never let me go. I had a goofy grin on my face almost the whole time, and my legs were jumping up and down out of excitement and suspense. The theaters was packed and responsive which only made the film better. Rian Johnson's direction is tight and focused, and he does not allow the film to waste one moment. The momentum he keeps in the film is just perfection. Also, the opening sequence really gave me Rear Window vibes which I loved. And come on the screenplay! The screenplay is fantastic. Structurally perfect and fascinating, and never giving you enough to make you feel content til the end. The film is hilarious, but also has a lot to say which I didn't expect. There is one theme of the film which I think is just so simplistically beautiful. The editing is great and the cinematography is subtle but fantastic. The production and costume design feel like characters which is always amazing. Now I have to say the cast is just phenomenal, but there are too many to talk about them all so I'll focus on a few. Ana de Armas, who've I've been waiting to see in a lead role, is absolutely fantastic. She is the stand out, and brings so much heart and thoughtfulness to the role making you love the ride you're taken on. Daniel Craig is eating up scenery in this film having so much fun, and really helping propel the tone of the film. Chris Evans is also so good. I'm glad a director finally let him be a snarky asshole because I've always thought he'd be great at it. Really could keep praising this, but there isn't much more I can say without spoilers. Fantastic film, and one of my favorites of the year. Who knew I'd be debating on this over The Irishman for the top five favorites of the year.
