Look there's only one thing I really want out of a Scream movie these days, and that is fun.
Fun is what has kept me coming back to this franchise time and time again. Fun is why I'm able to watch Craven's original twice a year or more and never get bored. This far into the series, expecting any of them to surpass the first one is a fools game, so fun was the very least I could hope for.
Thankfully Scream (5) is just that.
I'll admit I was doubtful - 30 mins in I had this feeling of dread that they were taking it too seriously. That they were trying to take the series in a different direction, but as soon as the re-quel jokes started I took a sigh of relief and spent the rest of the film with a sly smile adorning my face.
A smile which by the absolutely wild final act (the best since 96) could have been seen from space.
The jokes land, the new cast mostly work, the gore is genuinely gnarly at times and the meta takes are the best they've been since Scream 2. In fact I'd go as far to say this is my favourite addition to the series since no.2 and oh boy what a joy it is to be able to say that.
Side note: More films that mock toxic fandoms please.
