The Northman

The Northman ★★★★½

ᚹᛟᚹ!

Director Robert Eggers" previous movie, The Lighthouse was a very culty slice of oddball filmmaking that inspired me to song parody, but his followup, The Northman is a jaw-dropping masterpiece of myth and mood that completely redefines the Viking film genre for the 21st Century.

Eggers takes the roots of Shakespeare's Hamlet and transports it via extreme digital color grading, barren Icelandic vistas, beserker rage, and religious ambiguity to a totally believable Mise en Scène of 8th Century pagan ritual revenge.

I loved the fact that Eggers made absolutely no attempt to lard the plot with anachronisms or modern morality, and simply let it exist as an unrepentant tale of bloody revenge.
