    Sound of Metal

Man, I really love this kind of film. Sound of Metal excellently puts you right in the shoes of a character coming to terms with the loss of one of his senses. The directing, sound design, and acting all work together to give you a sense of what the lead character is going through. It's artistic and emotional, although it never strains credulity. Ruben as a character feels fully developed, despite the fact that we first meet him only at…

  • The Trial of the Chicago 7

The Trial of the Chicago 7

The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a fantastic film that manages to effectively connect a historical drama to modern times. Though the film deals with a court case that occurred nearly 50 years ago, many of the themes and events tie in very easily to this year. The film deals with the concepts of a civilian population's right to protest, police violence, and the dangers of those in power weaponizing bureaucracy against those who already are not represented by…

  • Onward

As should be expected, Onward is another excellent entry into Pixar's lineup. It blends laughs and emotion with just as perfect a balance as one could hope for. What adds to the charm is the focus on sibling relationships, which are often overlooked in film in favor of parental storylines. The bond between the two brothers was relatable and powerful, and definitely tugged on this proud older brother's heartstrings.

If there's anything to complain about it would be a small…

  • Uncut Gems

    Uncut Gems

Uncut Gems is one of the most anxiety-inducing films of the year. The Safdies have again proven themselves to be masters of building tension. This film never lets up for a second, taking every single opportunity to keep its protagonist in trouble. While films like this can often stretch believability, the filmmakers and Adam Sandler have created a character so believably self destructive that it never really becomes unbelievable. Sandler has delivered maybe the best performance of his career, as his character feels truly lived in and unique. All around a strong film for those who can handle the stress.
