Man, they just don't make movies like this anymore. Top Gun: Maverick feels like a lost 80s sequel. It has a real tangible feeling, it wears its heart on its sleeve and it chooses to tell a simple self contained story in the best way it can.
Sure, the story here is pretty much exactly what one would expect, but it tells it so damn well. The action is electrifying, the aerial cinematography is unbelievable. Maverick is the kind of action hero I'd like to see more of. He's blatantly emotional, and his problems with authority are not played without consequence. The film is about how cool he is, but it's also about his relationships to the characters around him, how he changes them and how they change him.
Overall, there's little else to say besides, what a good damn film. It delivers what it promises, doesn't overstay its welcome, and leaves you with a good, buzzed feeling exiting the theater.
