Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog ★★½

Sonic the Hedgehog is a bit of a mixed bag. The film is pretty oddly paced, with some scenes flying by while others seem to drag on far past their logical endpoint. The same is somewhat true of the main character. Ben Schwartz is a great fit for the character, but the character's truly nonstop chatter has a tendency to get annoying. Enough of it works to keep the film entertaining, but there's a LOT that doesn't really land.

The true reason to see the film is Jim Carrey. It's been a LONG time since he's been let of the leash like this and it's a blast to watch. It feels as though he was allowed to improvise most of his performance, since the character is very reminiscent of Carrey's 90s work, with some weird decisions that nobody else would make.

Still, I'd really only recommend this film for those who really want to see another bonkers Jim Carrey performance. The rest of the film is entertaining enough, but falls firmly on the bland side of things.
