Shutter Island

Shutter Island ★★★½

Martin Scorsese directs this atmospheric psychological thriller where things are not always what they seem to be. Great movie to watch on a rainy day. The musical cues can be a bit heavy-handed at times. Occasionally the script is a bit too cute or attempts to seem smarter than it is, but thankfully most of this is early on. Several comparisons and parallels can be drawn between this and Inception which came out the same year. Overall I'd say Inception is a couple notches better but this does entertain in strong fashion. Kingsley, Von Sydow, and DiCaprio in particular elevate the material with excellent performances, and the handling by Scorsese is superb. Due to third-act story details it is a very different movie on rewatch.
