It's good, but nowhere near the perfection of the first. Probably the most kid-oriented of Brad Bird's animated films in terms of humor and aesthetic; the racoon scene feels way goofier than anything Bird has done in any of his films and the new supers look more like the stock photos that show up when you search "superhero" and I really wish they kept the retro-future look that they had in the first movie. At least it's consistent with the first movie in introducing a bunch of themes and not resolving them in a meaningful way.

Probably the best movie ever made that is also this thematically unfocused. There are a few themes you could latch onto (nostalgia/a man's midlife crisis, being present in the now, exceptional people being stifled by the rest of society, accepting help from your support network) and absolutely none of them are resolved in any meaningful way but the movie is just so exciting, so funny, and so inventive in literally every other aspect that you forget all about those lose…

Absolutely stunning. Truly a shame that we don't live in a world where world renowned craftsmen aren't releasing 30 year passion projects on a regular basis. Maybe I'll explore some connection this film has to Richard Williams' The Thief and the Cobbler at some point; on paper they have pretty similar development stories.

Last first watch of the year, and holy shit what a good one to go out on. It's definitely for the best that this movie is only an hour and 17 minutes because any more would be unbearable lmao.

  • The Suicide Squad

    The Suicide Squad

    ★★★½

It's not that great but it's a pretty good time. This movie feels weirdly empty, like some scenes play like stealth missions when they should be like the camp attack from the beginning of Predator, and a lot of the music cues here feel slightly too low energy for what's happening on screen. There's some cringe humor in here but the jokes land more often than they miss at least.
