    Dune

    ★★★★½

At last, I understand the hype. After struggling for a month now to start the novel, Dune is a vibrant, multi-cultural display of wonder and enticement with a worthy cast from top to bottom.

  • Stillwater

    Stillwater

    ★★★½

At 139 minutes, Stillwater is overly long for casual viewing. It is desperate to make an impact, grasping at themes of fatherly love and shameful mistakes. Our characters -played movingly by Matt Damon and Abigail Breslin- are ones seeking reconcilement after long, unspoken failures.

Yet, the movie is muddlesome, conflicting, and irregular. Strong performances can only get you so far, and I was tired by the end of it.

The choice of Lin Manuel Miranda as director does little more than add another Broadway name to the cast of star-studded cameos. Nevertheless, it is a testimony to the artists who came before, to the talent that strives for their name in lights.

A true celebration of a playwright taken before his time, fully carried by the strength and charm of Andrew Garfield’s performance.

    Squid Game

    ★★★

Far from a perfect story, Squid Game is endlessly captivating and absolutely brutal. It loses steam in the second half, trudging along with plot points that fail to pay off in the long run. Nevertheless, like all the colosseums that came before, the entertainment never stops.

A guy came in and sat a seat away from me.

He pulls out some Mike & Ikes and starts chewing. LOUDLY.

I valued my sanity as well as the intact-ness of his jaw, so I moved 5 seats away from him.

I could still hear him chewing.

So I dreamt about stabbing him in the eye.

“I found him? I don’t remember doing that... No. What’s more, I think I can get along without memory.”
