The Hidden Fortress

The Hidden Fortress ★★★★★

Film Club #5

I felt like a kid watching Star Wars for the first time again. For this outing of the film club one of my friends suggested we pick a Kurosawa movie. I wanted to choose a samurai epic of his I hadn't seen yet, and recently discovered how much this influenced the George Lucas franchise. The vote seemed to be unanimous.

This is a real deal on the grand-scale. The elaborate sets, costumes and photography give it such an authentic look. The music is perfect and definitely seems like John Williams may have took some liberties with it. The extras in that POW escape scene and the action on horseback are so exciting! The story is fun and the characters seem so familiar. All of these spirits have been reincarnated through different storytelling, whether it be in space battles or fighting over gold in the wild west.

Two similar movies that are two different experiences. To me, this is the Blood Simple before No Country For Old Men.

Only Toshiro Mifune can make brooding in a loincloth for 2 hours look cool.
