    Sparkle

By the numbers musical melodrama anchored by stellar performances, songs, and moody direction and photography.

    Halloween Kills

    ★★★

An audacious sequel that will find the right audiences hooting and hollering like they’re at the New York City premiere of EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC. When horror fans look back in twenty years, it’ll be considered a high camp favorite of the Trauma-sploitation era.

Like a big budget hangout picture that Crown International Pictures used to crank out, LICORICE PIZZA is frustratingly unfocused—every time it starts to bring the story together it takes a detour—but like those ‘70s picture, if you let the vibe take you over, it’s an enjoyable world to escape to for its runtime. The story is secondary to the photography and costume design: even the actors feel of the era with unkept eyebrows, greasy foreheads, and imperfect teeth (Hollywood needs more imperfect teeth) that whisk you away to a time that you may pine for or just want to experience for a little bit.
