Brian’s review published on Letterboxd:
Finally opened near me and given all the praise I'd heard along with seeing Céline Sciamma's other films and being impressed there was a lot for this to live up to. And it lived up to all of it. Portrait of a Lady on Fire is such a personal and beautiful film that I can't praise enough. I will certainly need to rewatch this, but from my first viewing, the writing is excellent. The dialogue hits on an emotional level and its perfectly executed by Adèle Haenel and Noémie Merlant. The chemistry between these two is excellent and the way their characters interact is both beautiful and heartbreaking. The movie looks gorgeous: the color, the set design, the costumes. It all fits together so well and elevates this movie further. I will be thinking about the song from the trailer for a long time and just wow there are so many little things in this movie that make me want to rewatch it and just examine every detail closely. Truly a beautiful movie and Céline Sciamma's best to date. Absolutely loved it.
