Maybe it's the marketing, maybe it was bad timing, but I feel like this should have been RDJ and Val Kilmer's big comeback (RDJ's comeback would come three years later though), sorta like how Pulp Fiction worked for John Travolta and Bruce Willis. RDJ and Kilmer have such infectious chemistry, I never wanted any scene with them to end!
The truth is this film is way too clever for its own good - all Shane Black scripts are kinda like this! Because Black is more interested in the witty and the subversive. This is a murder mystery that doesn't care about the murder; it is set in LA but not interested in Hollywood! In short, it's a pulpy noir by Shane Black!
