AHHH! Why did I wait this long to see this movie?!
SCREAM is everything I want out of a campy, self-aware, satirical, meta horror movie. TAKE NOTES "MALIGNANT" - because this is how you pull off over the top cheese but still make it digestible. And that's thanks to the man, the myth, the legend Wes Craven babayyy. He knows how to expertly tread that fine line between good and bad - and dances in that small space in between. One line too much and it topples the entire multilevel fortress he's built. One wrong music cue, one wrong shot - but that's what is so effortlessly amazing about this - there isn't one wrong anything. The actors knew how to deliver this dialogue, the crew knew how to shoot this aesthetic, and Wes was the maniacally comedic puppeteer behind it all.
MATTHEW LILLARD. OH. MY. GOD. I swear it's people like Matthew Lillard that only fuel my horrible obsession with falling for douchey straight men. BECAUSE GAHD DAMN WHAT A FINE PIECE OF MAN HE IS. And the homoeroticism between the three men?! FUCK DUDE.
The opening sequence is a standout of course was a standout. Drew Barrymore giving it her all - giving us ALL the emotions.
But I just LOVE all the hysterical jabs that Wes takes at horror films - especially the horror market at the time. You see the 80's and early 90's became saturated with nothing boy horror sequels. We were getting Friday The 13th Part 89 and A Nightmare On Elm Street 18. And Wes just RIPS the entire market apart.
Favorite line that showcases that? Easy - "Oh c'mon you know I don't watch that shit (horror movies). Why? What's the point, they're all the same. Some stupid killer stalking some big breasted girl who can't act who is always running up the stairs when she should be running out the front door. It's insulting."
LIKE BAM. That's the genius of this movie. Right there. Ah. I can't wait to watch this over and over again.
