I really enjoyed watching this film. The pacing didn’t feel too thrust upon me, the action sequences were tasteful when they occurred, and all of the characters were compelling enough to make this film really engaging. The film as a whole was tense throughout most of it. However, this film screamed “early-2000s” at me. All of the technology and themes in the film reminded me of the anti-piracy ads that would appear on DVDs before the menu screen of DVDs of that period.
The only message I can take away from this film is that “men are bad sometimes.” The choice to make the main protagonist mute outside of internal dialogue at the beginning and end of the film is an interesting one. Emotion had to be expressed through expression and the daughter’s character alone in this film, and sometimes I felt disconnected from Ada as an audience member. I do like how this film doesn’t explain a lot of backstory, and when it does, it’s from an unreliable narrator. This leaves Ada’s past open for interpretation.
This film was surprisingly wholesome, and I really liked how it was seemingly counting down the minutes until the new year. It reminded me of the feelings of powerlessness I had as a kid and not having adults take you seriously and try to shrug you off. However, if I were in those kids’ situation, I probably would have given up.
