Plain and simple: Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King rules! It contains one of the most exhilarating action of the year. Viola Davis gives one of the best performances of her career. Her eye acting slays, dude. Lashana Lynch is the MVP for me. She’s such a badass in this & continues to be on the rise of the many actors who you can’t keep your eyes off. Same goes for Thuso Mbedu who’s fresh off Barry Jenkins’ limited series The Underground Railroad. John Boyega is solid. I loved Terence Blanchard’s score. The costumes. It’s by far Gina Prince-Bythewood’s best directed film, I wouldn’t go as for as to call as her best one as she’s made a couple others that I very much liked growing up such as Love & Basketball and The Secret Life of Bees. But this was great stuff, man.
