Loved this. Three hours of pure spectacle, with some of the most expertly choreographed action in recent memory, and an earnest maximalism that’s completely infectious from start to finish. It’s impossible to deny just what a force this movie is. It floors the gas from the very beginning, and barely ever lets up for the whole three hours. I hardly felt a second of the massive runtime. Just when you think it might be slowing down for a minute, there’s a set-piece involving a truckload of wild animals going apeshit on a bunch of British colonialists. Or an elaborate dance number, or a motorcycle flying through the air in flames, or one of the countless other scenes that would take too much time to list here. It’s exhilarating. And it’s thrilling to see how the central relationship evolves over the course of the film; it’s an arc we’ve seen before, but each development feels natural and earned, with an element of surprise always present. This is blockbuster filmmaking at its finest, and it’s certainly a high point of 2022 so far.
