    The Woman King

    tiff film #3

absolutely unrelenting. heart racing, blood pumping, adrenaline churning spectacle, grounded by a trio of stellar performances. action, visuals, and heart alike so good that everything else sort of pales in comparison. a few random plot points are thrown in, and it definitely could have shaved off a good 15 minutes— but what works works wonders.

    Stories Not to be Told

    tiff film #2

oozing with wit and charm— one of the best pure comedies i’ve seen in a minute. the formulas are tried and true, but for the most part the script is so tight and masterful that everything feels pretty fresh. there’s not too much to chew on stylistically, but the writing usually makes up for it.

    anthologies can be good actually!

definitely a step up from blackfish in that it really dives deep into its subject versus a more surface level take. there’s enough information and storytelling in here for three separate documentaries, all of which i would love to see. similar to blackfish, the interviews and archival footage are top tier stuff, even if they sometimes stoops to low brow strategies of eliciting strong emotions from the audience over the substance of the interview. great to see this at tiff scotiabank theater 2 and to see the crew afterwards. good stuff.

first half is great! second half slowly becomes insipid and listless and tedious and all those adjectives.

    No Time to Die

my favorite part about this movie is that MI6 created the ultimate murder weapon— using dna to specifically target certain groups of people in order to kill them— and just ~hoped~ it wouldn’t fall into the wrong hands.
