Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981
I always forget about the most insane moment in this, when the monkey does the Nazi salute. Goes without saying, but the visual sophistication here is next level. So many incredible shots, Spielberg went crazy with this one.

A Man and a Woman 1966
So so so very tender and beautiful, my heart is swelling. Maybe a little too much car racing for my liking (This isn't The Fast and the Furious! Go back to the romance!), which is a little fussy of me. I knew Anouk Aimée was a superstar when I first saw her in Lola and this has only furthered that sentiment.

The Big Red One 1980
I didn’t plan on watching this nearly back-to-back with The Steel Helmet, but it probably didn’t do it any favors to still have Fuller’s much starker and more haunting war film in the back of my mind. The Big Red One is less a harrowing anti-war statement than an episodic adventure, wringing excitement from anecdotes inspired by Fuller’s own experiences in the 1st Infantry Division, which is fine. The film is at its best when coloring its suspenseful set pieces…

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts 2023
Rise of the Beasts doesn't quite live up to the euphoric spectacle of the Bay films or the quaint heart of Bumblebee, but it has a good enough combination of the two to be a fun summer blockbuster and one of the better movies in the franchise. Ron Perlman/Michelle Yeoh stood out to me as two Maximal additions, but it was Pete Davidson and Anthony Ramos who injected some much needed life into this. Mirage kind of rocks! Their relationship…

Paint Drying 2016
If you’ve got a minute in between your multiple viewings of Across the Spider-Verse, you should check out my latest music video. Bought a dolly for this one. Didn’t realize how wobbly it would be without tracks though 😅

Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981
How can I be remotely objective about one of my favourite childhood movies? I can’t really. So enamoured am I with this swashbuckling, tomb-raiding adventure—a film that was one of the most formative of my movie-obsessed upbringing—that my adult self is somehow forgiving enough to overlook the awkward cultural appropriation that peppers it. It’s funny, isn’t it, how we all get so worked up about Temple of Doom’s cultural insensitivities (and rightly so) when there’s a fair bit of the…

Palm Trees and Power Lines 2022
The most obvious point of comparison is Red Rocket, mainly because of the central predatory relationship between an older man and a teenage girl, set in small town America. However, this is far more sombre and the depth and vileness of predation is more extreme than Red Rocket. It is also told from the girl's point of view, and adds a layer of depth to the proceedings, with the final scene leaving you shaking your head at the despondent but…

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts 2023
If I had a nickel for everytime Luna Lauren Vélez plays the protagonist's mother in a blockbuster, released in the same month, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Competently, safely, and passably fun! With its fair share of fanservice and nostalgia that'll please the fans, Rise of the Beasts is the most Transformers movie. Not in the Bay way, but in the fact that they actually have loads of screentime, along…

Deal of the Century 1983
Cinematic Time Capsule
1983 Marathon - Film #116”Do you know anything about guns?”
Today on DEAL OF THE CENTURY our good friend William Friedkin will be dropping by to give us a state of the art demonstration on how even the greatest of directors can still create something surprisingly awful…
"State of the art, my ass!"
FUN FACT: This was one of only two films that director Friedkin completely ignored in his memoir."All visitors must abandon the area immediately!"
"Repeat: All visitors must abandon the area immediately!"

Conspiracy Theory 1997
I love Richard Donner and before his rant and rave Mel Gibson was one of my favorite actors. Julia Roberts is desirable by God and Goddess! In the end this work for me.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes 1971
Re-watched on Disney+
An inversion of the first one which is exactly the sort of plot a sequel should’ve been in the first place, focused on the two highlight Ape characters of the original (especially Zira - I wish Kim Hunter had been in Conquest/Battle alongside Roddy McDowall, it would’ve felt as fitting as McDowall playing both Cornelius/Caesar and Hunter is so great in this one especially that it’s sad that Fox didn’t convince her to stay on afterwards). It…
