    Life Itself

I haven't recently watched this movie "Life Itself." I'm using it as a stand-in for my low-key announcement that relates to the subject of this movie, Roger Ebert. First, I'll discussed my personal history to the name in some length. If you just want to read my little announcement, then scroll down to the last paragraph.

Roger Ebert. I love this man. He's my idol, one of my favorite writers, and someone who got me interested in any…

    "Great Movie" #195.

With Barry Lyndon, I've now watched exactly half of Roger Ebert's entries in his "Great Movies" list during this binge that I started about two years ago. In deciding what to watch to help me reach this halfway mark, I wanted a movie that I was already familiar with and really enjoy. Plus, I got the Criterion Blu-ray copy of this 1975 epic that needed to be opened. As anyone who has seen this picture would…

    Past Lives

The cinematic equivalent of breathing in fresh air. So pensive, so lovely. Tears for the past as the pain lingers. Smiles to come in the future. Reflection to be had in the present before a special relationship gets us unstuck.

    Dune: Part Two

Sigh. It looks like I'm gonna be in the minority for this one.

I just didn't get into this. I didn't get a whole lot more into Part One even during my third and most recent viewing, but I liked it enough that I was on board for what that movie was setting up for us to see in the continuation. Admittedly, I always mentally checked out for whatever reason right before that ending fight scene in…

    Top Gun: Maverick

It's kind of funny seeing the Nicole Kidman ad and Tom Cruise's message within two minutes prior to the feature, huh?

Believe the hype, folks. "Top Gun: Maverick" is rock-solid entertainment. It greatly improves on the original 1986 film, and this is coming from someone who doesn't care much for that one. Is the sequel just as pro-Navy and continues displaying the opponents as faceless enemies? It does, as expected. Is the "Tom Gun" cheese still intact? It…

    Anatomy of a Fall

Such a smart, tense and well-constructed courtroom drama and family drama. Two-and-a-half hours well utilized. The death actually occured a bit earlier in the movie than I expected. Ambiguity is the secret sauce here. It's not about whether or not the defendant killed her husband. It's about whether we ever really know someone close to us. This drama even goes a little deeper by asking about stories themselves, fiction and nonfiction. Objectivity versus subjectivity. How much of the storyteller's…
