The Five Devils

The Five Devils ★½

Very disappointing, I was hoping to like this off its description but the magical realism was half-baked and not particularly well-flourished, and it definitely whiffs in trying to sell its small-town rejected romance (which I guess small towns in France are the most beautiful towns in the world? God damn). A lot of well-wishers here are praising a pretty quaint needle drop while I'm over here lamenting how it glossed over any bit of characterization that would help sell that moment. Even the intriguing core of the daughter fighting to find familial connection with her parents while making her discoveries of the past are served short by the completely unwritten Dad, barely written other characters, and it having nothing to say about its elements.
