Mikha-eel Fester’s review published on Letterboxd:
I can now confidently say Eggers is one of my absolute favourite directors. This marks 3 for 3 bangers from him in my book.
I love everything about this movie.
The gorgeous cinematography and set design, with its minuscule attention to detail.
The booming soundtrack and dedicated performances, particularly in the trippy dream sequences and Viking rituals.
The magical realism and the simple revenge story weaved, reminiscent of the epics of old that the movie is based on.
It reminded me quite fondly of the The Green Knight in those aspects, which was my favourite movie of last year.
While I didn't fall head over heels for this movie like I did the aforementioned The Green Knight, or Eggers' own The VVitch and The Lighthouse, I do still love this movie nonetheless. It's not quite at "instant classic"/masterpiece level, but I do think it is a lesser masterpiece for sure. I look forward to revisiting it from time to time to get more from its brutal, revenge-soaked journey.
