I prefer 'The Master' over this any time of day. If 'The Master' is often viewed as boring, than 'Inherent Vice' should be deemed unwatchable. Yeah, it has a nice look, pleasant atmosphere, good cinematography, conspicuous score by Greenwood, and occasionally funny dialogue, but the detective story is passive and devoid of any emotional charging or development; damn it is awful. In contrast to Freddie Quell, Doc Sportello is totally wasted. Even more so, Phoenix plays himself. Why should I care?
I'm not sure I want to even think about this film anymore. Better watch 'The Long Goodbye'.
