Halloween ★★★★★

"Hey, jerk! Speed kills!"

Some people revisit old books or parks or friends to feel comfortable or nostalgic. I watch Halloween. I know every beat, the backstory behind every shot. It feels familiar and warm and I know that nostalgia clouds my vision, that if all my memories of this were erased and I watched it for the first time today, I'd probably only like kinda like it. But, thankfully, I won't have to unless my memory is even worse than I am currently aware.

Halloween feels incomplete without Halloween. Admittedly, one of the worst aspects of this film is that it's really tied to the holiday in incredibly few ways beyond the name. But through time and memory, I've grown to attach the two in my mind.

A lot of my conscious attempt to watch more horror began out of my attempt to find more movies like Halloween. It hasn't really worked: I've discovered many movies I've loved, great ones, but ones that quite had the spell over me like Halloween. But I do still have Halloween, which is still enough as far as I'm concerned.
