Matt Maddock’s review published on Letterboxd:
I don’t even know man...
This fucked me up. Nothing happened the way I expected. There’s twists and turns, legit scares, and some of the most unnerving images I’ve ever seen put on film. Toni Collette gives a masterful performance that honestly is worthy of an Academy Award nomination and I’m surprised to say that Alex Wolff gives a truly emotional performance as well. The first 30 minutes of this film are creepy, yes, but then one moment happens that changes the trajectory of the whole film, emotionally and in terms of the scares. I legitimately felt like I was going to have a panic attack. It’s gut-wrenching, horrifying, and deeply saddening all at the same time, and it stays that way for the rest of the film.
In terms of A24’s filmography, this is their crowning achievement in the horror genre. Yes it’s better than The VVitch.
Go out and see this immediately. Just be prepared for a terrifying experience.
