    A Cure for Wellness

It is astounding that a studio gave Gore Verbinski $40 million dollars to make this movie. It is less astounding that the movie grossed $26 million worldwide. In this era of too safe franchises and reheated IP you want to root for big swings like this, but sometimes big swings lead to big misses. This is the kind of whiff that generates Category 4 storm-level winds.

I don't even know how to convey how bad A Cure for Wellness is.…

  • Hombre

I know that I am 100% alone in this opinion, but Hombre is the greatest western ever made and I intend to make my case right here and now.

Pretty much all westerns can be put into one of two categories: there are town westerns and there are wilderness westerns. Town westerns are about the margins of civilization--these movies can modulate the size of the town or the degree of control law enforcement holds but they all basically boil down…

    Good Grief

Early on in this movie I thought that Levy had the seeds of a couple of pretty great ideas. First, it seemed like it was going to explore what it is like to feel like you were the less brilliant and well-loved member of a couple and how that feeling would muddy the normal grieving process. Do people wish it had been me instead of him? That kind of thing.

Then, the movie moved on and seemed like it was…

    Orion and the Dark

I liked this fine. It's visually imaginative and the Charlie Kaufman meta elements are certainly amusing to see shoehorned into a kids story. My kids liked the movie and I found it pleasant.

But we really do need to get back to making kids movies with real villains again. Every new animated kids film is extraordinarily high concept and involves the characters confronting personality issues or trauma in their relationships and it's all starting to get a little bit same-y.…

    Zack Snyder's Justice League

The charitable view of Zack Snyder's Justice League is that it works better than the Joss Whedon-reworked theatrical release, because unlike that unholy mishmash of styles and tones, ZSJL better represents one single artistic vision, and the gargantuan running time allows for the character development that Snyder and Warner Bros. skipped by rushing to the team-up movie before they had properly introduced the team.

I cannot agree with the charitable view.

This version probably is more pleasant to watch on…

    Hell or High Water

I have already rhapsodized on the greatness of this movie, so I won't belabor the point here. Suffice it to say, it holds up beautifully. Just a perfect action movie with tough guy dialogue that actually lands.

I want to briefly single out the scene where Foster and Pine stop for gas and while Pine is inside buying cigarettes and Dr. Pepper a couple of douchebags pull up in a green sports car and start picking a fight with Foster.…
