First Cow

First Cow ★★★★½

This was my first Kelly Reichardt film and I need to watch more of her work. A slow-paced, relaxing movie about a beautiful friendship with themes of capitalism makes this one of the best films of the year. Slow movies aren't for everyone, but for this movie, the pace was purposeful. John Magaro and Orion Lee have amazing chemistry together as the unlikely friends who create a successful business. However, Evie, the cow is a standout. The story is simple, yet engaging. Between this and 2020's Emma, Christopher Blauvelt is a cinematographer to look out for. With the cinematography and shot compositions, this movie completely transports to Oregon during the early days of America. Also, the opening scene and the closing scene are both incredible and I hope to watch more Reichardt soon.
