Halloween ★★★★½

"Death has come to your little town, Sheriff."

Arguably the most influential slasher film of all time, Halloween's incredible impact has not diminished over the past four decades, despite the inevitable glut of sequels and copycats. I don't think it's necessarily unimpeachable - the second act could be a little tighter, and Loomis does spend a lot of time just waiting around for stuff to happen - but the story is sturdy, Pleasence and Curtis are charming as hell, and Carpenter's wide angles and POV shots instantly create this genuinely unnerving atmosphere which few imitators have been able to replicate as effectively. I haven't seen any of the other Halloween movies yet, but I'm guessing none of them are quite as impressive and timeless as this. Well, maybe Halloween III is, I don't know...
