Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a sequel that surpasses the original space opera. Just like the original it fully embraces it's goofiness, but this time around it adds more character development and more substance. Everything that we loved from the first one is still here, but with a much more emotional impact.
James Gunn has a lot more characters to work with this time. He has a bigger ensemble, but he makes sure every character gets enough screen time and gets developed properly, new and old. We get some interesting and unexpected pairings, emotional moments and the humor that James Gunn knows how to deliver. It's beautiful.
My favorite team up was Yondu and Rocket. People said they were the best part of Vol. 2 and yes they were absolutely right. They just work so well together because they're such similar characters. The movie even says so. Even the villains were well developed. The MCU has had problems with it's villains, but I feel like Marvel is slowly fixing that problem. And Baby Groot was also funny and adorable.
I gotta say I was surprised by this film. I was expecting a movie like the original only with less character development and more action and comedy. Instead I got a really solid character driven movie.
