Completely different movie on rewatch. Not that the film itself changed, it’s still a masterpiece, but I’ve grown to understand and connect with it far more in the few weeks since my first viewing. I think it’s one of the greatest films about art ever made. I grew up enamored by the images in Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park, films permanently etched into my life, so to watch Spielberg grapple both with his own inspirations and the haunting memories that have shaped his entire body of work—to watch something so self-reflexive and melancholic without losing that loving touch at the core of every single one of his films—is groundbreaking to me. Quite definitively my movie of the year.
