The Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad ★★★★★

This is suicide….. Well, that’s kind of our thing.

Well that was a fun ride. This is more than I expected to get. James Gunn hasn’t just crafted one of the best comic book films in recent history, not just one of DC best films, not just one of the most fun blockbusters I’ve seen. But he has made one of the year’s best films.

James Gunn is on top form with ‘The Suicide Squad’. He had the creative freedom to do whatever the f**k he wanted to do. And it shows here. Gunn’s humour is on top form. Maybe there was a few jokes that didn’t land. Also poking the ridiculousness of the groups different powers. This has more heart than I expected it to have, I would say though, this doesn’t have the emotional beats like his two guardians films. But he knows the characters inside out, he makes you care the main group. Like his guardians films, it’s visually stunning to watch.

His direction is a level above what he did with the guardians. The way he shot the action sequences and the fighting choreography is far superior. This is really really over the top gory and bloody and I love it. This is Gunn off the leash.

The characters get their own chance in the spotlight and with a runtime of 2hrs 10mins, nothing feels crammed. Margot Robbie is off course the main standout, this is her best performance as Harley Quinn. Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) returns and this is a MASSIVE improvement of his character. He is soooo good and actually interesting. Idris Elba is a new entry as bloodsport. He has got such great comedic timing with John Cena’s Pacemaker. Who was a surprise as well. Given the right material, Cena knows how to deliver the laughs. Ratcatcher 2 played by Daniela Melchior and her playing off Elba delivers the best from both actors. I wish we had more from Peter Capaldi’s the thinker. Getting someone like him in the role, just wanted a little bit more. And we have the one and only Sylvester Stallone voicing King Shark, I think Gunn wrote the character with only Sly in mind. It was fun to see him part of the group in the action sequences and he made he laugh the most. I love King Shark. We need more content of him.

I like that Gunn wanted to make the film have more practical effects and shoot the film on location. And you can tell there is little CGI used.

What Gunn has achieved with ‘The Suicide Squad’ is simply putting it, a phenomenal achievement! This is his magnum opis. It’s funny, emotional, bloody, we get King Shark. Seeing it in IMAX really made the difference. See this film on the biggest screen possible. Look what happens when directors just make their own film without any studio interference….
