The Godfather: Part II

The Godfather: Part II ★★★★★

One of the greatest works of art ever put to film.

The epic scope of this film encompasses everything from family to the enormity of the immigrant experience in America, to how to act as a man in life.

Upon rewatching this I was really struck by how dark and tragic the story is. Michael is truly soulless by the end of this film. He is alone, without anybody to hold close, joke with or even have a non 'business' related conversation with. Marlon Brando brought to the first Godfather a lightness and a sense of humour that would not be expected from a mafia chieftain - in Part II, Al Pacino cannot bring any of the qualities of Brando because being the Don has bored out his soul.

The final flashback is just so heartbreaking...
