I was watching the commentary to Black Narcissus where Powell alternates with his #1 fan Scorsese and the effect is like a sleepy old lion at the zoo paired up with one of those otters that compulsively do tricks on the waterslide for 14 hours a day.
Anyway if anything Marty is still underrated, mostly for his virtuosity at directing camera movement. He marshals the tilt, the pan, the zoom like a master choreographer and no one gives him any credit…

This movie is a good satire of contemporary literary fiction with overly precious elements of magical realism but the big twist is that the book is supposed to be good? I thought it sounded like a real piece of shit. And of course, there is zero effort to explain why, exactly, this protagonist must die to advance the themes of the novel, which may or may not have any themes at all.
Liked it though. Dece 2000s mids, the weeknight treat
