The Northman

The Northman ★★★★½

The new FDA-approved testosterone booster.

The reaction that I’m having to this movie reminds me of how I reacted to David Lowery’s The Green Knight (which ended up being my favorite of 2021): I feel this rush of adrenaline, and pure state of awe. This movie has such a well-balanced narrative; sometimes it feels like the usual (and expected) epic historical action drama, but then it becomes a horror movie, and then it diverts into fantasy territory. Plus, it’s visually gripping. I don’t know if this will be my favorite movie of the year—we’re not even halfway through 2022—but it’s definitely my favorite Eggers movie. I appreciated what The Witch and The Lighthouse brought to film, but with The Northman Eggers just reached a higher status for me. Also, I think this is Skarsgård’s best movie role since The Diary of a Teenage Girl. His performance transported me to viking times. The man is truly a viking! Did you see those abs!? Did you contemplate those traps!!?? Shoutout to Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, and Claes Bang cause they also nailed it!

The moment of giving a heart on Letterboxd to an Eggers film has finally arrived for me, and it feels so good.
