Think this basically works because it somehow has a clear understanding of the actual mechanics of how we got here. Obvious to bring up the title coming from Reagan’s speech about the end of the world, but it clicks into place when Anne Hathaway’s Esther expresses fear that Reagan will bring the country into nuclear war - that’s the Armageddon in question. Not gonna say the colonialism angle is a red herring, since it’s definitely part of the recipe, but the central idea here to me is rationalism: the idea/illusion of progress, the ends justifying any means, the cold, smiling violence of "everybody [having] his reasons". A kind of skewering of the French character only a non-Frenchman could make. It’s not gonna love you back.
