Not gonna say the colonialism angle is a red herring, since it’s definitely part of the recipe, but the central idea here to me is rationalism: the idea/illusion of progress, the ends justifying any means, the cold, smiling violence of "everybody [having] his reasons". A kind of skewering of the French character only a non-Frenchman could make. It’s not gonna love you back.
