Asako I & II

Asako I & II ★★★★

Hamaguchi puts his own spin on Kiyoshi Kurosawa formalism, but not without allowing some modernity to seep in. Whereas the teacher looks to the past, the student exists in the present, riffing on dating in the 21st century through Kitano-esque deadbeat performances and an infectious J-Pop soundtrack. Like The Straight Story of the Kiyoshi Kurosawa extended universe (not explaining this).
