    The Mercy

In what seems to be one of the most epic mid life crises ever- a mild English gent with an otherwise reasonably successful life hears the call of the ocean and decides to head off on a solo sail mission around the globe. Based on a true story.

I thought I was going to be into this because it’s an ocean adventure film, unfortunately it just never really seems to take off. Firth’s performance is reasonable and costume and set design are solid.

A wry outback roadtrip comedy-drama with some good chuckles, moving moments and mostly authentic writing.

Although a little rose tinted, our trip through small town life and the complexities of modern indigenous culture is mostly accurate.
The outlines of the artwork are correct, but it’s been coloured in with crayons to take the edge off for mainstream audiences, similar to ‘Red Dog’.

Only glances into the main character's personality. Shows us the what but seems stand-offish to ask the why Alex is how he is. There are some pretty heavy duty issues just below the surface that very apparently don't get addressed.

A spectacular physical and mental human achievement, the day to day somehow lacking in veritas though (which is likely just the editing choices).
There's less than 5 minutes of footage of the actual El Capitan climb, with act 3 obviously providing the clenched/ vertigo inducing moments.

Basically an extended short film. Tricky when the subject doesn't particularly want to be filmed I guess.

1976 high school in America, but it could be high school in the 70s, 80s or 90s in any western country. A timeless cult classic with a great script, killer soundtrack with excellent casting and characters. This is the only role to date that I’ve ever seen Ben Affleck absolutely nail.

Great cars. A young Mila Jovovich. Non-stop relatable scenes and characters. Even in the year 2050, teens will be able to watch this movie and resonate with it.
