So I have been wanting to watch Blade runner 2049 for a while but I figured I needed to watch this first in order to give myself context. I went into this one not knowing much about it and I can't say I was looking forward to it all that much. I kinda just expected another Alien like sci-fi film. Man was I pleasantly surprised.
This film is way more of an art film than a sci-fi action film.
The visuals as memorizing and stunning. The lighting throughout is top tier and the effects hold up surprisingly well. Many of the frames in this film are held for a very long time and just ooze atmosphere and dread while all being endlessly beautiful.
I have to say though, I think my favorite part was the score. This score is hypnotic. It does some serious leg work in creating the atmosphere of this film. It's slow, it's synthetic, it's romantic and most of the time it's unsettling. I honestly can't gush enough about how effective it was in drawing me into this world.
If I had a gripe with this film it's gotta be the characters. They work for what they are but for the majority of the film I wasn't invested in their story. The film focuses much more on the atmosphere and style of the film than the characters. Luckily in this case I don't think that was the worst decision.
Can't wait for 2049.
