  I mostly enjoyed this subdued investigative story. Upon further research, I discovered that this is based on a real case from where the director grew up and the real detective is playing the part of Torao. This adds an absorbing meta-layer to the filmmaking. I found most of the investigative scenes between Torao and Kayako to be incredibly well shot and compelling.   The last of the Best Picture noms I had to watch before tonight’s show. I liked it. I think its large scope overcompensates for a lack a depth in places but perhaps that will be flushed out with the second chapter. It certainly was visually and aurally outstanding.

  I made a commitment to see all the Best Picture nominees this year and have arrived at the one I was anticipating the least.
