What a gem! At first the awkward 90s-indie “dialogue dialogue” left me entertained by its wit but unsure of where we were going - but the last 40 minutes or so unearths something I was not prepared for and brought me to tears. I’ve always enjoyed Tom Noonan as Charlie Kaufman’s ‘that guy,’ but he’s fantastic leading this film, which finds so many compositional and lighting ideas within such a single room it feels like an entire city of emotions…

American Fiction 2023
Have to agree that the film is definitely better at satire than the emotional beats, and it did halt its momentum for a lot of those. Still, not a terrible (if not ironic) People’s Choice winner that thoroughly sustained my attention. Love to see Jeffrey Wright in more lead roles.
