The Godfather: Part III

The Godfather: Part III ★★★★

MARIO PUZO’S THE GODFATHER, CODA: THE DEATH OF MICHAEL CORLEONE

Having reviewed the very weak original cut, I feel the need to say that this part is infinitely better than its original. Even after I watched the original cut a few weeks ago, I always felt there was a better movie in there waiting to be seen one day.

I would dare say it is great. It’s not a masterpiece the way Parts I & II are, but it’s far from the deeply flawed movie it used to be. Sofia Coppola’s acting is still somewhat weak, but the fact there is less of her greatly improves her performance. The biggest change in this movie is that it is now coherent and everything that didn’t land the first time completely hits the second time.

It’s a perfect example of how editing is the end all be all of a film and how it alone determines how well a movie works or doesn’t.
