I love this movie more with each viewing. It has gotten richer and more hilarious as the years go by. Carole’s personality is infectious and it makes me miss her. I’ve watched this movie so many times, the Bullocks feel like real people, as if they’re still up to the same antics on Fifth Avenue today. It remains fresh, sharp, and clever - all in a dizzying package. This movie has gotten me through some pretty dark times. A true pick-me-up for a melancholy day.
There is so much I could say about this movie and its impact on my life, but I’ll start by saying this is categorized into my “movies that make me sob uncontrollably” file. Never has a film so beautifully encapsulated friendship, love, grief, and the melancholy of the passage of time. Vulgar in the best, most pre-code way possible, Jean Harlow sizzles in this. What I love most about Jean is her ability to add a sense of vulnerability to her characters, which makes them all the more relatable and easy to love.
This is one of those definitive pre-codes that everyone should see. Also bonus for a young Charles Boyer!
